Chapter 21 of the Daodejing invites you to explore the essential paradox of the Dao: even though you cannot see or touch it, you know instinctively that it is there deep inside you. Only by aligning yourself with the Dao can you tap into its profound wisdom and power and understand the origin and essence of all things.

Section 1
The greatest power comes
Only from following the Dao.
The substance of the Dao is
Shadowy and indistinct.
Indistinct and shadowy.
Within it is an image,
Shadowy and indistinct.
Within it is a substance,
Dim and dark.
Within it is an essence.
This essence is real,
True and unwavering.

The chapter begins by asserting that the Dao is the source of the greatest power or virtue. The only way to harness this power is by aligning yourself with Dao, rather than attempting to impose force or control over it.

The Dao is so shadowy and indistinct that it is impossible to describe in conventional terms. All we can discern is that it is multi-dimensional with a substance, an image, and an essence that represents its unchanging nature.

Section 2
From ancient times until now,
Its name has never disappeared.
The origin of all things.
How do I know the origin of all things?
Through this,
Through the Dao.

The Dao is timeless and eternal. It has existed from the dawn of antiquity until now and is the origin of all things. It is not only the source of power and virtue but also the key to understanding the fundamental nature of reality.
