Daodejing Chapter 1: nothing and something at the same time

The Dao is the essence of the universe. It is so pristine and powerful that mere words are inadequate to define it.

The Dao is comprised of two complementary elements, much like the left and right sides of a brain. It is the principle that underlies the functioning of heaven and earth and the process by which everything is created. Contemplating the principle of the Dao requires stripping away all your preconceptions and desires. Contemplating the process of the Dao requires focusing your awareness of everything that is happening around you.

The Dao is thus nothing and something at the same time. It is invisible and visible, intangible and tangible, the source and the outcome, and the “gateway to all marvels.” Tapping into the infinite potential of the Dao means approaching it with an open mind.
